Drinking black tea may help smokers fight emphysema risk, experts say!




Black tea may have the ability to help chronic smokers fight increased risk for emphysema, experts at a recent conference on tea health benefits in Delhi said.

According to Koustubh Panda, head of the department of biotechnology in Calcutta University and director of West Bengal Biotech Development Corporation (WBBDC), antioxidants found in black tea may make it useful as a preventive measure for smokers who are at risk of contracting emphysema.

Emphysema is a progressive ailment that afflicts the lungs. It causes shortness of breath. This disease is classified under a group of ailments called chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or COPD. It is called such because the lung tissues around smaller sacs of the organ, called alveoli, are destroyed thus making these air sacs unable to hold their functional shape upon exhalation. As the physical shape of the lungs is destroyed, the functions of the lungs are likewise impaired.

Emphysema is often caused by smoking and long-term exposure to air pollution. It is reportedly the fourth major killer disease around the world.

According to Panda, 90% of emphysema victims are cigarette smokers. He said that antioxidants abundant in black tea prevent cigarette smoke-induced oxidants of lung protein from wreaking havoc, thereby protecting against emphysema.

"(Black tea) can act as a saviour for those who lack the willpower to kick the butt. However, this research does not encourage people to take up smoking," he added.

The daylong conference in Delhi entitled 'Health and Longevity Through Chai: The Wonder Beverage' was organized by the International Life Sciences Institute-India (ILSI-India) and supported by the Tea Board, the National Institute of Nutrition and the National Tea Research Foundation.

Researchers from across the globe that have been conducting extensive research on tea and its medicinal properties presented papers and participated in the discussions.




Black Tea may help cure Breast Cancer, researchers say!




According to Indian scientists, black tea is beneficial in treating and even curing breast cancer as their researchers have shown that a compound in black tea kills breast cancer cells, opening a way for development of a new, safe anti-cancer drug.


"We have heard a lot about anti-cancer properties of green tea. It is because most of such work has taken place in parts of the world where green tea is consumed," Dr Tanya Das from the Bose Institute, Kolkata, said at a sectional symposium at the 93rd Indian Science Congress.



"But we have used a compound called theoflavin from black tea leaves in our experiments," she said.


Experiments were carried out on mice and human breast cancer cells in laboratories and "the response was very good," she said. This black tea compound led to death of cancer cells and also caused slowing down of a process called metastesis, which is responsible for spreading of cancer cells, Das claimed.


The compound causes death of cancer cells by affecting the balance of "onco-proteins", the proteins which play a role in manifestation of cancer, Das said.


"In experiments, about 50% of cancer cells were killed," she said. The anti-cancer drugs have the problem of toxicity as they kill healthy cells too and also suppress the body's immunity.


But "our experiments showed that this compound was not toxic to cells," she claimed. However, the absorption of this black tea compound by the body is very low.


Thus, the better way would be to develop a new drug, for which theoflavin may be combined with any derivative to increase its absorption by the body, she said adding, "we are working in this direction."

Black tea as good as green in oral cancer prevention, research shows!




Researchers in India have uncovered evidence to suggest drinking black tea could help prevent the development of oral cancer in subjects with leukoplakia, a disease that causes white spots to appear on mucous membranes on the tongue and in the mouth.


The preliminary results of a study at the Vivekananda Institute of Medical Sciences in Kolkata, published in the Journal of Environmental Pathology, Toxicology and Oncology, show that micronuclei frequency and chromosomal aberrations significantly decreased in the first 15 participants to complete a year-long program of drinking black tea ( Camellia sinensis ) three times a day.


Although the positive results relate to just a small group, they are consistent across all subjects who have completed the study so far. The results for another 67 participants will be available by April 2006.


Changes in the appearance and quantity of leukoplakia white spots in the mouths of the patients who have completed the study to date were also noted.


According to the researchers, oral carcinoma is the most common malignancy found in Indian men and the third most common in Indian women. In half of all cases, precancerous lesions, usually leukoplakia, appear prior to the development of full-blown cancer.


Most of the research into tea's potential for reducing the risk of various types of cancer has involved green tea which, although also derived from Camellia sinensis, contains different active compounds from black tea due to its production process.


For green tea, the leaves are steamed and dried, a procedure that preserves catechin polyphenols such as the powerful antioxidant epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG).


Black tea, on the other hand, is made by oxidizing the leaves, which converts the EGCG into other compounds. In the past scientists have unfavorably compared the benefits of compounds such as theaflavins and thearubigens to EGCG, but black tea is starting to gaining credence as a health-promoting preparation in its own right.
